ORIGINS OF THE EL DORADO LEGEND

The origins of El Dorado lie deep in South America in what is now Colombia. When a new chieftain rose to power, his rule began with a ceremony at Lake Guatavita. The new ruler was covered with gold dust and adorned with jewels.  That gold and precious jewels were thrown into the lake as an offering to the gods.

The Spaniards and other Europeans had found so much gold among the natives along the continent’s northern coast that they believed there had to be a place of great wealth somewhere in the interior. The Spaniards didn’t find El Dorado, but they did find Lake Guatavita and tried to drain it in 1545. They lowered its level enough to find hundreds of pieces of gold along the lake’s edge. But the presumed fabulous treasure in the deeper water was beyond their reach.

In reality, gold was not important to the natives as was salt, which was mined in Sesquilé, Nemocón and Zipaquirá, was of vital importance in the economy of the Muiscas because it was used for commercial exchange with other tribes, from which they obtained, among other products, gold and emeralds that they used as Offering to their gods especially during ceremonies.

EXCURSIONS THAT YOU WILL DO

  1. SACRED LAGOON OF GUATAVITÁ

Visita laguna de guatavita

This pristine site, today is converted into a beautiful natural reserve where you will do an ecological hike through the mountain, to later find the mystical lagoon, cradle of the LEGEND OF EL DORADO, still revered by the survivors of the Muisca people in the region and by some meditation groups who consider it a portal.

The Muiscas worshiped water because it represented life and that is why they made their offerings to their gods in the lagoons.

2. TOWN OF GUATAVITÁ

Guatavita was a region of Muisca goldsmiths. Today it is one of the towns preferred by both Colombian and foreign tourists. Located just 1 hour from Bogotá by car, with its colonial structure, full of squares, passages and surrounded by the beautiful Tominé dam, it is perfect for walking; learn about the work of local artisans, visit their indigenous museum where they tell you their history and enjoy typical food. It is also possible to find a place to camp or practice water sports in the Tominé dam.

3. NEMOCÓN SALT MINES

Visita a las minas de salThe mine is located in the municipality of Nemocón, a Muisca word that means “Lament of the Warrior”. The natural beauty offered by this tour through tunnels 80 meters underground, the salt waterfalls, the water mirrors, the heart-shaped crystal of salt are surprising.

The history that you will know there is absolutely interesting. This site was very important for the Muisca economy and was the basis for the Muisca’s barter with other Colombian indigenous groups.

caminataA hike is a very good way to strengthen your physical condition and recharge your batteries through nature.
